BTT: Don't Fence Me In
There are certain types of books that I more or less assume all readers read. (Novels, for example.)
But then there are books that only YOU read. Instructional manuals for fly-fishing. How-to books for spinning yarn. How to cook the perfect souffle. Rebuilding car engines in three easy steps. Dog training for dummies. Rewiring your house without electrocuting yourself. Tips on how to build a NASCAR course in your backyard. Stuff like that.
What niche books do YOU read?
Hmm, I hope I can do this question justice. I read a variety of stuff so I don't have a particular niche that I just have to read, but I do read some slightly odd ball stuff:
*Craft Books: This consists of sewing, scrapbooking, crochet and general craft books. I have a nice collection of those. I don't know if you can say I read them as much as use them. Although some are beautiful enough that I just enjoy looking at them.
*Classics (written by women): Are classics a niche? I don't know, but I have a soft spot for old books written by women: the Brontes, Austen, Eliot, Wharton. I'm interested in reading how they saw the world as people who didn't have much of a say in things.
*Weird Science Non-Fiction: Occasionally I'll come across non-fiction science reads that interest me: The Secret Life of Lobsters, The Seven Daughters of Eve, The Pluto Files. Something that deals with the fun side of science. I'm looking forward to reading Wicked Plants.
*Ecology: This is along the lines of the previous niche. I've become very interested in books on ecology lately: Ecoholic, Animal Vegetable Miracle. Anything that discusses how to live a more 'green' life.
*Local Folklore particularly Ghost Stories: I'm a sucker for these 'true' tales. They are true, right? Why would anyone make this stuff up? I love the local stuff because I can freak myself out when I'm in the location of the supposed event (Is that where he saw the hairy man?).
I think that's it. How about you? Do you read any of my niche books?

I forget to mention science books. I have a good many collection of those. General sciences..not specific. Although I do have a PG degree in Chemistry!

I'm the same way with craft books. Love looking at them. I'm just not very artsy-craftsy myself.
Local folklore- that sounds like a very interesting niche! I usually don't believe those stories, but once while staying at a bead and breakfast in Virginia (where I happen to live now, too) there was a book there all about local legends and folklore. It was fascinating.
My fiance also likes the weird science books. I'm not really into them but he still tries to get me to read them!
I haven't thought about local folklore since I went to a play with my school in fifth grade on the Jersey devil. Funny. =)
I read all kinds of books my friends & family once tried to convince me only I did but with the advent of the internet, not so.
Have you read Salt by Mark Kurlansky? Excellent.
I've started reading more books about ecology. I loved Animal Vegetable Miracle. I've definitely increased my reading in that area.
I've had Animal Vegetable Miracle on my shelf for a long time. I really need to make time for it.
Love this list -- I read several of them, too. I also look for local authors' works at Hastings or other book signings.
I've been getting more and more interested in classics by women, particularly overlooked ones. And weird science is awesome :D
I had such a hard time with this question. I don't really feel like my reading fits in a niche, in particular an unusual one. The idea of reading classics by women is an interesting one!
I love looking at crafts books, but I'm really no good with my hands in crafts - except knitting maybe!
My niche is art and photography books, I have a lot of them! :)
Local Folklore is something I would be interested in too. But haven't come across many such books.
Oh, I used to read a lot of those local folklore/ghost story books too! I think I sold most of them, but they are pretty interesting. Haven't been in the mood to read them for a while, though.
